What’s for me: Architect or Engineering Manager

As you progress through your engineering career, you face a choice of becoming a Tech Architect or an Engineering Manager.
While both career paths are equally rewarding in terms of compensation, at least over the mid-term, an engineer needs to assess his capabilities, and aspirations to choose one of the two career paths. In short, an Engineering Manager has to manage and grow a team, whereas an Architect is predominantly an Individual Contributor (IC) role.
So, a Software Engineer who doesn’t want to hire, solve problems of, reward and retain people should be considering an Architect career path. On the other hand, if an Engineer has aspirations to manage teams while being comparatively less hands on than an Architect should take the Engineering Manager path. It must be highlighted at this point that, by and large, Engineering Managers are more likely to take C-suite responsibilities in the longer term.
