 What does a Backend Engineer do?

A backend engineer is responsible for building the structure of any software application. They are known to design, build and maintain the server-side of applications. Besides, the primary function of backend engineers involves writing server scripts, business logic, and APIs that will be used for build internet-based products. Additionally, Backend Engineers build security structure, optimize servers for stability and speed, and create data storage solutions.

Necessary skills

• Expertise on database systems, patterns and structures

• Hands-on with one or more of programming languages in demand: Java, Python, Node.js, Golang and Ruby on Rails

• Familiarity with server compliance and accessibility

• Software design and OOP Knowledge

Progression

Backend Engineer can take two career paths — Architect or Engineering Manager. An Architect is an individual contributor and an Engineering Manager is responsible for managing teams. The latter career path is more likely to lead up to the CTO or the CTPO role in a tech backed company.
