Comfort with uncertainty and ambiguity - a necessary skill to reach the top

We know communication, leadership and teamwork are a few critical skills. However, the ability to manage uncertainty and ambiguity is necessary to excel and advance in any profession.

As you grow in your career and reach higher positions, you will be dependent on the information available to you. This information, in almost all situations, will be incomplete, imperfect or open to interpretations, and hence, dealing with ambiguity becomes critical in taking the best business decisions.

The work scenario that exists today is fast-paced, evolving and complex. There are no perfect answers to every problem that a business encounters. An individual who can deal with ambiguity and uncertainty breaks down the problem into smaller parts, enlists possible solutions, defines metrics and milestones to gauge performance of a proposed solution, iterates multiple times to arrive at the best possible solution. S/he can better tackle the lack or unavailability of data, and are, therefore, more likely to succeed professionally, especially in non technical functions.
